Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas is a six book, young adult fantasy series. At the mere age of eighteen, Celaena Sardothien, the protagonist, is the most famous and feared assassin throughout Adarlin until she is turned over and forced to survive in the salt mine concentration camp Endovier. After a year of wasting away as a slave, Crown Prince Dorian gives her the chance to earn her freedom back by becoming the king’s champion. To become his champion, she must battle against twenty-three other contestants who are just as lethal as she is. With the Crown Prince sponsoring her and the Captain of the Guard training and guarding her, she starts to feel her heart pulled in two separate directions and doesn’t know which way to go. Throughout the contests, the other competitors begin to die unexpectedly and it’s up to her to figure out why. With the help of her new found friends Chaol, Nehemia, and Dorian, Celaena starts to uncover that a darker magic lurks within the castle and someone unexpected might be behind it.

Throne of Glass is a perfect choice for anyone who enjoys fantasy and suspense, tied together with a splash of romance. Each chapter draws readers in even further to where it was seemingly impossible to put it down. People can find themselves rooting for certain characters and questioning others. Celaena is a confident, inspiring person, whose character develops into someone greater than what’s seen in the beginning of the book. Each character has many secrets of their own, keeping readers constantly on their toes. With plot twists left and right, it’s hard to figure out what is true and what is not. Instead of just focusing on one point of view, the book changes every few chapters into different character’s perspectives. Readers will go from Celaena to the Captain of the Guard, to the Crown Prince and back again. Opposing views keep the story going and gives insight into what everyone is thinking. The characters, plot and underlying themes will please even the pickiest of readers. Readers will find that there is never a dull moment when following Celaena’s adventures. The story ends at a perfect spot that allows some suspense until the next book. Those who enjoy suspense, fantasy, romance, and a little darkness wrapped into one, will love reading this story.
