West Side Wrestling Starts Season Strong

West Side Wrestling Starts Season Strong

On Saturday, December 10, the wrestling team had a successful tournament in which they dominated. Head coach Tom Svec earned his 400th and 401st win as a coach which is a tremendous milestone. It was also their first tournament of the year, and the main focus was enjoying the day of wrestling. Many wrestlers moved around from their usual weight classes, and the team was still successful. Wednesdays meet on December 14 was taken very seriously by the entire team as they faced the Chicopee Pacers who have a somewhat deeper lineup than the previous years. The Terriers pulled out wins in many tough matches and came away with a commanding 49-21 victory. In their, meet against Longmeadow on December 21 the team had another big win. With only one loss from the Terriers, they were practically unstoppable.

On January 2, the team went to Ashland, MA and competed in a team tournament. West Side beat Pathfinder in match one, then bested a more competitive St. John’s Shrewsbury squad in the second match of the day. In semi-finals, the terriers matched up against the host school of Ashland Mass, who gave the team a good run, but the West Side wrestling team yet again came through winning the dual meet and advancing to the finals. Face to face with state top 20 ranked Bridgewater/Raynham, the dual meet final came down to the very last match wrestled by 120 pounder Devin Svec who fought hard to not give up a pin. After six minutes, with Svec not giving up a pin, the Terriers won the finals in a narrow victory of just one point. The wrestling team is now 11-0 on the year and rolling forward.
