Halloween. A time for scares, candy and horror movies. Most people love scaring themselves by watching Scream, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Saw and countless other horror movies on a stormy night in October. However, not everyone loves the jump scares and gives-you-anxiety chase scenes that make up classic horror.  So, for those who want to get in the spooky mood without having to sleep with the lights on, here are some other movies that can get you into the spooky Halloween spirit.

Ghostbusters

Ghostbusters: In a classic 1984 movie, three former paranormal psychology professors, Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz and Egon Spengler, lose their jobs at a New York University. Ray convinces Peter and Egon to delve into the paranormal world as a ghost removal service. Also known as the Ghostbusters.

Hocus Pocus: In 1693, the Sanderson sisters, Winifred, Mary and Sarah, were sentenced to be executed for their unforgivable witchcraft in Salem, Massachusetts. Just before their execution, Winifred conjured up a curse. When a virgin lights the black flame candle on Halloween night, they shall return. 300 years later in 1993, Max decides to light the candle in order to scare his sister, Dani, and his crush, Alison. Now, the three Witches have returned to the modernized Salem, ready for a night of fun, magic and scares.

Shaun of the Dead: Life isn’t too good for Shaun. His job sucks, he hates his step dad and it doesn’t get any better when his girlfriend dumps him. With a cricket bat and his best friend, Ed, by his side, Shaun sets out to rescue those he loves and those he doesn’t, and heads to the safest place he knows… the Winchester (a bar).

Their peace is disrupted when the Deetz family buys their house and the Maitlands are just too nice. In order to scare them out, these harmless ghost turn to their fellow ghost friend, Beetlejuice, for help.

Halloweentown: Marnie, Dylan, and Sophie Piper are a family of witches. One night, their grandmother, Aggie, visits the family to talk to their mother about their witch training. Aggie wants to start Marnie to begin her raining before her thirteenth  birthday because if she doesn’t, she will lose her powers forever. Aggie also stopped by because she senses something evil growing in her hometown, Halloweentown, and she wants help to defeat it. When Aggies leaves on the Halloweentown bus, the kids unknowingly sneak on, which is just the beginning of the magic and secrets, with darkness in the future.

Monster House: Three teenagers, DJ, Chowder and Jenny, think that after mean old man Nebbercracker dies from a heart attack at his house, all the torture is over. But, by are they wrong. When DJ’s Nanny’s, Zee, boyfriend, Bones, goes over to the house and starts kicking its grass, he gets swallowed by the house. Now, all three of the teens need to try and stop the house. Sadly, there was only one way of doing so… going inside the house. The kids discover that Nebbercracker’s house isn’t a normal house. Throughout the movie, they try to unravel the mystery of the house and the reason it’s so… different.

 

Casper

Casper: Carrigan Crittenden inherits a mansion from her deceased father. Angry she received the mansion instead of his fortune, she’s ready to burn the place to the ground. She then discovers a map to a treasure hidden in the house. However, when she enters the mansion to try and find the treasure, she is frightened away by ghosts. Determined to get the treasure, she hires an afterlife therapist, Dr. James Harvey, to exorcise the ghosts from the mansion. Harvey and his daughter, Kat, move in, and soon Kat meets Casper, the ghost of a young boy who’s “the friendliest ghost you know”. Sadly, his uncles, Stretch, Fatso and Stinkie, are not so nice and are determined to drive all “fleshies” away, but it’s up to Harvey and Kat to help the ghosts cross over to the other side.
