Olympic Winter Athletes to Watch

Olivia Acevedo, Editor- in-Chief

The Olympics are one of many historic competitions the world has to offer. Every four years, millions of people are glued to their TV screens watching the world-class talent being showcased. Although many people look out for the exciting events that take place, there are numbers of stars, even ones in the making, that are trying to make their mark. This year, in South Korea, there are over 100 athletes, both men and women, that are ready to show the world what they can really do.

Snowboarder, Jamie Anderson

For women’s snowboarding, 27-year-old Jamie Anderson has already established her talents. In 2014, she was able to earn a gold medal in slopestyle snowboarding. Since then, she has only continued to thrive. In 2015, 2016 and 2017, she’s earned gold and silver at the annual Winter X Games. Expectations are high for her earning another medal.

Ice-dancing pair, “Shib Sibs”

Ice dancers Alex and Maia Shibutani, otherwise known as the “Shib Sibs”, are respected ice dancers who have had a very successful year, while only being ages 23 and 26. The pair earned two gold at international competitions this past year alone and have collectively been recognized on the podium at national championships for the past seven years. In 2016 and 2017, they were able to take first place. It’s almost certain another year of success is headed for the sibling pair.

Professional snowboarder, Shaun White

An obvious candidate for top athletes to watch for, is perhaps the most famous snowboarder in the US, Shaun White. Although White had some difficulty making the podium at the 2014 Winter Olympic games, there is no doubt that the story might be different this year. Being a two time Olympic gold medalist and winning 10 ESPY Awards in the past, White is a talent that will never be doubted.

Bobsledding driver, Kaillie Humphries

Kaillie Humphries, recognized as the greatest female bobsledding driver in history, is widely known as one of the greats for this event. Humphries and her teammates, Elana Meyers Taylor and Jamie Greubel Poser, were given World Cup titles as well as ceding world championships, just last year. It wouldn’t be a surprise if they repeated the past.
