It’s that time of year when couples think of cute ways to ask each other to prom, commonly known as “promposing.” Couples make posters and a poem, bake custom pretzels, decorate a car or bedroom, or even choreograph a song and dance in order to ask their partner in a special way. Promposing, while seemingly a newer fad, has actually been around since the early 2000’s, possibly the first one being in 2001 (although there could have been earlier ones). The ‘01 Promposal was the first ever Promposal to make the newspaper. According to The Washington Post, “The [Dallas Morning News] was commenting on what was, at the time, a charming new phenomenon.” Students were asking each other out to prom

over the loudspeaker, parodying Adam Sandler’s song in “The Wedding Singer,” singing lyrics such as, “All I wanna do, is go to prom with you.” From there, promposals grew bigger and bigger, becoming viral around 2007-2011, thanks to videos being posted to Youtube and Facebook, students asking celebrities, starting with Justin Bieber in 2012, then finally hitting the peak

in 2014 when promposals became a must in order to go to prom. Although some promposals are a bust, or some undergo scrutiny from anyone who has social media for being blatantly racist, most are smooth sailing and have everyone aweing and longing to be promposed to in a way that will go viral. Here are some West Side promposals that will have everyone’s hearts skipping a beat.
