The drama club is preparing for their performance of the comedy You Can’t Take It With You, by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman. Set in 1930s New York, the play depicts the life of the Sycamores, a very quirky and odd family, and their encounter with the Kirbys, a more uptight family. The reasoning behind these two families meeting and possibly joining one another is due to the Sycamore’s youngest daughter and the Kirbys’ only son’s potential engagement. There are some vast differences between the two families which causes a large amount of turmoil and humor. The comedy will premiere on December 7th with performances on the 8th, 14th, and 15th.

“Our kids really love comedy and do it well. This particular play is so uplifting, and I think we need more positive things in our lives. There’s enough drama in the news and politics. We need to laugh some,” said director Mrs. Svec.

The play consists of a fairly small cast of nineteen roles, and most of them are male. Many times when a cast is mainly male but the actors are mainly female, the casting director might genderbend (crossdress) some characters or even simply ignore the fact and allow a woman to play a male without putting even in a drop of makeup or fake mustache. As for this year’s comedy, “We rarely stick to the strict original casting and often like to mix things up. That said… what we did is a secret. You will have to come and see for yourselves,” said Svec. Students in the club are already eagerly at work on the show. “We have gotten a great start so far. We are making some great progress and everyone is excited about the show,” said Devin Gearty, who will be playing Grandpa Martin. The drama club will have five performances of You Can’t Take It With You, the date of the fifth one to be determined.

Since the play takes place nearly a century ago, one might think it doesn’t hold up with current issues and current humor. That’s not the case, seeing that Mrs. Svec’s original thought on modernizing this classical piece was swiftly thrown away. “The theme is timeless but there is something innocent and quaint about the original time period, so we will leave it as is,” she said. Senior Ceara Bowler, who will be playing Alice, urges students to come out and support the show. “The play itself is funny and heartfelt. The characters are all engaging and interesting,” said Bowler. No matter the time period, the characters and story are still meaningful.

Most plays have a deeper message that many often miss. When it comes to You Can’t Take It With You that isn’t the case. “Every good play has something for the audience to hang on to. This one is pretty straightforward and you don’t have to annotate the text to find it. The message is: Be yourself and enjoy life…. It’s that simple.” Mrs. Svec explained.
