Winter athletes to keep your eye on this season

Nik Morissette- Hockey

The hockey team’s senior goaltender has proven himself as a top keeper in Western Mass. Last season he fought through a struggling defensive team in front of him to average 27 saves per game. He also kept a solid 85.6% of shots on goal out of the net.

Rudi Spano- Girls Basketball

Spano is a senior power forward who was a first team all western mass selection last season after averaging more than 13 points per game and nearly 10 rebounds per game. She is also a Super 7 selection this season.

EJ Faniel- Boys Basketball

This sophomore point guard will be looking to lead the team to bounce back after last year’s rough season. Last year as a freshman, he went on to lead the team in points scored, averaging nearly 10 per game.

John Blair- Boys Swimming

John is one of the elite swimmers of Western Mass. Going into his senior year, he looks to win the 100 freestyle (came in 2nd last year) as well as the 200 IM (came in 3rd last year) in Western mass. He  claimed 13th in the state in the 100 free last season. He is also a Super 7 selection this season.

Lauren Kenney- Girls Swimming

This freshman already has what it takes to be great. On her club team, the Westfield Wave, she has already met times to qualify for Western Mass in several events, without ever competing in a high school meet. She excels in breaststroke and will be looking to place among the top in Western Mass this season.

Josh Bergeron- Wrestling

Josh is a captain of the team as a junior. Last season he finished third in Western Mass in the 120 lb weight class. He was also only one match away from placing in the state tournament. He has put in a ton of off season work; look for him to be even better this season.

Dean Vogel- Boys Indoor Track

Dean has already proven himself as a top runner in Western Mass after he placed 4th in the PVIAC tournament in cross country. He also placed 10th in the Western Mass tournament, and he was selected as Athlete of the Week. Last season he placed 10th in states in the indoor track 1 mile race.

Natalie Armstrong- Girls Indoor Track

Natalie is only a sophomore and she is already one of the anchors of the team. Last season she participated in a relay at the state tournament. She currently holds a personal best of 8.13s and 48.87s in the 55 meter dash and 300 meter respectively. This season she’s back for more.
