BARBIE: MORE THAN JUST A DOLL

This movie about our favorite and iconic doll Barbie is quite delightful and fun but it also has meaning and great female representation.

The official movie of “Barbie” was released July 21, 2023. The Movie shows Barbie and her perfect life as well as all other Barbies and all Kens. Barbie’s ever so perfect life suddenly begins going down hill and is not so “perfect” anymore. Barbie begins to question the way she feels and why everything has been going so differently. Barbie is then sent on a journey to find the girl who plays/played with her doll in order to find the cause of her so called “malfunction” and makes things right. Behind this typical Barbie fantasy there is something much deeper that fans have realized. People who have watched this have understood that there is so much more to women themselves through this movie. The movie shows what it’s like to grow up and see the world such as men’s view on women;when they begin to look at you as just a body to objectify, what it’s like for women to feel unheard or less than a man because that’s what society makes us believe, it shows us women what it’s like to feel like your girlhood of younger years is disappearing. The world can be cruel sometimes but this movie shows us that we can overcome what makes us feel weak, what makes us feel unworthy, and what makes us feel like we aren’t good enough. This is something that I absolutely loved about this movie; the power the Barbie’s held without knowing it and it led them to persevere through what made them feel like nothing. My favorite message in this movie is from America Ferrara who in the movie is known as “Gloria” and she states “It is literally impossible to be a woman,You are so beautiful, and so smart, and it kills me that you don’t think you’re good enough. Like, we have to always be extraordinary, but somehow we’re always doing it wrong.”You have to be thin, but not too thin. And you can never say you want to be thin. You have to say you want to be healthy, but also you have to be thin. You have to have money, but you can’t ask for money because that’s crass. You have to be a boss, but you can’t be mean. You have to lead, but you can’t squash other people’s ideas. You’re supposed to love being a mother, but don’t talk about your kids all the damn time. You have to be a career woman, but also always be looking out for other people. You have to answer for men’s bad behavior, which is insane, but if you point that out, you’re accused of complaining. You’re supposed to stay pretty for men, but not so pretty that you tempt them too much or that you threaten other women because you’re supposed to be a part of the sisterhood. But always stand out and always be grateful. But never forget that the system is rigged. So find a way to acknowledge that but also always be grateful. You have to never get old, never be rude, never show off, never be selfish, never fall down, never fail, never show fear, never get out of line. It’s too hard! It’s too contradictory and nobody gives you a medal or says thank you! And it turns out in fact that not only are you doing everything wrong, but also everything is your fault. I’m just so tired of watching myself and every single other woman tie herself into knots so that people will like us, and if all of that is also true for a doll just representing women, then I don’t even know.” This quote had empowered many women and also made women feel like society understood them. As a personal Barbie fan, to watch this movie was the one thing I wanted to do more than anything. Watching this, there was a part of me that felt so complete, so understood, and that I wasn’t alone. I remember when I heard this quote I began to cry because I really felt what she was saying and it is quite nice to hear and see that sort of representation. I went to watch this movie with 2 guy friends, they thought I was being dramatic when I cried at this part which really comes to show how men don’t get the message that came across in the movie. It was said that the only negative review towards it was from men. Men became really offended by the way the movie portrayed them and other men were mad that the movie gave off a lot of feminism energy, but the original Barbie doll was made to be of good company for young girls, and society made it seem like you had to be perfect just like barbie, so it is obvious that the movie will covey women to realize the importance of being themselves and feeling perfect as they are. Overall, this movie was absolutely worth watching and is a great movie for everyone and if you haven’t watched it, I would definitely recommend doing so!
